Melvin (Stephen Dorff), a reluctant hero who is far from super, has been suppressing his telekinetic powers for years with booze, drugs, and women. In the process, he has failed at practically everything, most of all as a parent to his son. After a brush with death, Melvin decides to use his powers for good and clean up the streets of New Orleans with the help of his best friend/definitely-not-a-sidekick, Lucille (Eddie Griffin). American Hero feels more like a rookie director's debut than a film by someone with a solid track record, like the guy who made The Football Factory. The trailer pretty much gives away all the interesting parts, leaving the rest of the film as dull filler with lots of drug use and pointless chatter. The special effects are subpar, and not even Stephen Dorff or the wisecracking guy in the wheelchair can save it.

Not a big disappointment, but a small one for sure. There was room here for a pretty wild action comedy, but they decided it would be a message-driven film, telling the story of just one superhero who couldn't cope with his abilities. Will Smith excelled in this, even though the film didn't fully succeed in terms of special effects. No, this just didn't entertain me much.
