The truth was their resistance. Berlin, 1940. Working class couple Otto and Anna Quangel (Brendan Gleeson and Emma Thompson) receive the news that their only son has been killed on the battlefield.  Already disillusioned with The Führer and The Fatherland, the loss of their son proves the tipping point and Otto begins a campaign of civil disobedience, writing messages on postcards that urge fellow Germans to resist the Nazi regime. Anna soon partners with Otto and together they covertly distribute hundreds of postcards, left in stairwells and mailboxes across the city. At the head of the police force trying to track down the dissenters is Escherich (Daniel Brühl) who faces enormous pressure to find, stop and bring the traitors to justice. Acting alone in their unique attempt to turn the tide on German support for the Third Reich, this unassuming couple’s sacrifice became an important element of the German Resistance. Based on the international best-seller by Hans Fallada, Alone in Berlin shines the light on two ordinary German people who made an extraordinary impact. (Icon Home Entertainment)

English So far the latest adaptation of the famous novel by Hans Fallada "Alone in Berlin" (1947). Given that the German adaptations from the 60s and 70s have aged somewhat, and the Czech television miniseries (although excellent) never had an international outreach from the essence of the genre, it is very important that the topic has returned in this form. Emma Thompson, Brendan Gleeson, and Daniel Brühl offer excellent internal acting, the set design did not fail in any way, and the question of resistance was raised again. English Films about World War II always manage to captivate me in some way, so even this slow-paced movie, which could have been a bit more intense, slightly rises above average for me and compelled me to watch it, at times even with bated breath. Although focused on the spouses, the most interesting character is Daniel Brühl's. ()
