Vincent lives in a small French village, and his days are all alike. He gets up at five in the morning, goes to a station by a car, and then takes a train to a chemical plant where he works as a welder. During his shift he can't even take a break to have a cigarette. His wife has him more for a maintenance man of their desolate house, his two sons have their own worlds and don't want their father to meddle, and it applies to Vincent's parents, too. He doesn't have enough time for his hobby – painting, no wonder then that one day an ageing man doesn't grind out a cigarette in front of the factory, and instead of going to work he sets out to see places...
