This adaptation of J.K. Rowling's novel centers on an English village whose idyllic appearance belies a town in turmoil. When a local leader passes away, the community falls apart as various individuals and factions vie to take his place. The Casual Vacancy is a drama miniseries based on the popular novel of the same name by J. K. Rowling, and co-produced by HBO and the BBC. The plot centres on Pagford, a seemingly idyllic English village with a cobbled market square and ancient abbey. Behind the pretty façade however, is a town at war: rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils. Pagford is not what it first seems. When Barry Fairbrother dies unexpectedly in his early forties, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Fairbrother's demise causes a crisis at the town's council and in the personal lives of many, including a teenager to whom he gave a helping hand. And the empty seat left by Barry on the council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations? (official distributor synopsis)
