English We’ll always have the American Southwest and the South. Or at least one of us will... A love affair built on lies, fueled by a clinging to the present and mutual honesty. But when thoughts of the future creep in, there's a great risk that the foundations of the affair will be exposed again. Claude Lelouch handles it simply, naturally, with sharp dialogue and experimental editing that breaks the routine. While Jean-Paul Belmondo plays an unusually subdued role throughout, he still manages to sneak in his characteristic confidence. The bourgeois Annie Girardot shines most in the final sobering moments. There are times when even a loaf of bread under the arm won’t help... ()
