Impassioned but struggling Olympic wrestler Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) is lured by wealthy heir John du Pont (Steve Carell) to move onto his 1000 acre compound to help form the team he has dreamed of. Attracted by the virtues of the under appreciated sport, du Pont sees an opportunity to achieve something great. What begins as a patriotic mission to restore honour to the United States becomes a wild and weird drug-induced charade as du Pont’s hidden character emerges and Mark succumbs to the madness. When Mark’s deeply revered brother, Gold-medallist Dave Schultz (Mark Ruffalo), arrives to join the team, Mark must face what has happened and try to recover. Du Pont, ever more deluded and insecure, seeks to compete with Dave for power as the Olympics near. Based on the incredible true story, this psychological drama tracks a desperate obsession for greatness that was to end in tragedy and the conviction of the wealthiest American ever to be charged with murder.
