Paris, 1830. Romanticism prevails in France: it is the time of top hats, frock coats and outrageous representations of love in literature. Octave (Pete Doherty), a young man of respectable family, finds himself betrayed by his girlfriend. Afflicted, he submerges into the Parisian nightlife, guided by a nihilistic acquaintance. The situation changes when his father dies and young Octave is forced to return to the countryside, where he meets Brigitte (Charlotte Gainsbourg), a widow 10 years older, with whom he falls in love madly.
