A hair-raising psychological horror in the tradition of The Shining, The Barrens follows Richard Vineyard as he leads his family on a weekend getaway to the Wharton State Pine Barrens: home of the legendary monster, the Jersey Devil. The trip takes a dark turn when various forest animals wind up mysteriously mutilated and a teenage boy disappears from the campgrounds. As Richard falls violently ill and later becomes delusional, he starts to believe there is something stalking them... something with yellow eyes, pointed horns, and the wings of a bat. The Vineyards are soon fighting for their lives as the horrifying truth reveals itself in a shocking conclusion. (Transmission Films)

For horror fans, fine. This time, Bousman neither surprises nor disappoints. He delivers an inoffensive, unoriginal average horror movie with a fairly good psycho atmosphere, which is good news after last year’s fiasco with the awful 11-11-11. A family in crisis goes on a bonding holiday to the forests of New Jersey. The place is shrouded in a terrifying legend, tourists get lost, they find torn pieces of deer on the forest trails and daddy starts to lose his mind. Classic. Nothing memorable, but for a home screening in the evening it’s alright. ()
An excellent horror. Plus it features the flawless duo of Stephen Moyer and Mia Kirshner, who are better actors year after year in all genres. The ideal space, the ideal evil, the ideal limits of disgust. Great after dark, even better as a dose between True Blood Seasons 5 and 6. ()
