In 1892, a group of mostly black infantrymen desert the Spanish-American War. Disillusioned and disheartened by the betrayal of their white commander, Colonel Graham (Billy Zane, Titanic) the men return to their hometown of Freemanville to find it besieged by a racist war. Lead by Jessie Lee (Mario Van Peebles, Ali) the posse set out to revolutionise the west, to seek freedom and respect in a heartless and unforgiving world. Mario Van Peebles leads an impressive field of talent into the frontier in a dynamic western adventure that spins the genre in a new and exciting direction. Featuring Pam Grier (Jackie Brown), Isaac Hayes (Escape From New York), Stephen Baldwin, Tone Loc, Nipsey Russell, Blair Underwood, Big Daddy Kane and Aaron Neville, Posseis filled with gun-blazing, fist-pounding action and bounds along at break-neck speed to tell a tale of betrayed men, bound by honour and driven by justice. English Posse feels like the western Kirk Douglas had been dreaming of, especially since he produced and directed it himself. That said, the lack of a memorable score and the heavy focus on dialogue make it feel a bit flat at times, and the plot isn't the most exciting. Still, the characters and sweeping landscapes hit all the right notes for classic American western fans, even if it doesn’t quite reach the heights of the genre’s best. ()
