Travis, a man who has removed himself from his family and society, silently wandering the deserts of the southern United States. Missing for years and presumed dead, Travis is drawn back into society by his brother Walt (Dean Stockwell) after collapsing at a petrol station. Reuniting with the son he abandoned, Travis slowly begins to open up about the events which caused him to leave his young son and beautiful wife, Jane (Nastassja Kinski), but his return throws yet more lives into confusion.
