It is the 1660's women are forbidden from the stage and their roles are played by men. Ned Kynaston (Billy Crudup) is England's most celebrated leading lady. However when King Charles II (Rupert Everett) issues a royal decree banning men from playing women's parts, Ned is cast out of the spotlight overnight.
