New York City, 1922. Feisty young flapper Millie Dillmount (Julie Andrews, Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music) is a woman with much on her mind and a great deal of ambition to burn. Keen to marry into money, Millie has her sights set on wealthy company man Trevor Graydon (John Gavin, Spartacus) despite having feelings for penniless paper-clip salesman Jimmy (James Fox, Remains of the Day). Meanwhile aspiring actress and roommate Dorothy Brown (Mary Tyler Moore, Ordinary People) is also looking for love, but in all the wrong places. Living at the Priscilla Hotel for Single Young Ladies run by the strict and calculating Mrs. Meers (Beatrice Lillie) both ladies must overcome their respective entanglements in order to make their dreams come true.
