English An intimate analysis of the mental state of young Anne, who wants to have an “illicit” abortion at any cost, even though that could land her in prison (France in the 1960s) or even cause her death. Director Audrey Diwan, who had an abortion herself, focuses exclusively on the character of Anne, putting her in a position against society, from which she has to hide her situation and her intentions. Fearing the consequences, not even Anne’s best friends want to help her. Anamaria Vartolomei in the lead role acts as if her life depends on it and the viewer’s experience of her suffering is compelling, but the film needed something more to gain my adulation. ()
